Vintner’s Chamber Orchestra Preview Concert @ Schroeder Hall
Feb 16 @ 7:30 pm

Vintner's Chamber Orchestra

VCO Preview Concert

Please join us for an evening of exquisite music for string orchestra! Our program will include four masterpieces of the string ensemble repertoire, with music that spans across the globe and ranges from the 1800s to the present day.

We open our concert with music by the contemporary American composer John Corigliano. His “Invitation au voyage” (Invitation to the Voyage) is a hauntingly beautiful setting of a poem by the French Romantic poet Charles Baudelaire, transcribed by the composer for string orchestra from the original choral work. Then it’s on to the Bohemian countryside, with the joyful “Serenade for Strings” by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. Next it’s up north, with the tender and epigrammatic “Romance” by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. We conclude the concert with one of the most beloved works of all time, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, a virtuoso tour de force of Russian Romanticism.

Mercury Soul – Prismatic – The Color of Sound

Mercury Soul returns Feb 23 to DNA Lounge for Prismatic, a dynamic, multimedia-infused concert boldly uniting classical musicians with EDM/electronica in a thumping, club environment. Concertgoers dance and explore the space while being immersed in a world that engages both their eyes and ears, elevating the musical experience through a brilliant array of lighting, projections, and art installations by LED artist Christopher Schardt.

Integrated into sets by DJ Masonic (Mason Bates) and DJ Justin Reed are some of San Francisco’s finest musicians performing “color music” – music inspired by color. Piano trio Steel and Ivory will perform the industrial groove of Michael Torke’s Rust, the violent intensity of Piano Trio – Fiery Red by Jennifer Higdon, synesthetic composer Joel Hoffman’s shimmering Music in Yellow and Green, and music by the renowned Alexander Scriabin – whose concept of a “color organ” will be reinvented as a remix of his music for DJs, live musicians, tightly synchronized lighting, and an interactive light installation by Nick Kanozik. Also on the program will be steel drum group Pankind Trio, evoking the blue of the Caribbean sea with authentic calypso music, and original electro-acoustic interludes composed by Mason Bates for this event that lead in and out of each set, combining the full forces of our DJs and musicians. We’ll wrap the night with an incredible post-show dance party led by DJ JOill.
